KindWorks is a small non-profit in Montgomery County, Maryland whose mission is to inspire and enable busy residents to actively participate in community service. We do this by organizing and facilitating a variety of short-term volunteer projects and educational programs that address some of the most urgent needs in our community: poverty, hunger, the environment, emergency relief, tolerance and inmate re-entry into the community and job market.
KindWorks began as MoverMoms back in February 2007, when a group of moms served dinner together at The Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. Responding to the enthusiasm with which this effort was met, they formalized the concept of a group of moms who would regularly do volunteer projects around the community, often involving their young kids. MoverMoms was incorporated as a non-profit based in Maryland in the spring of 2008. In the winter of 2009, MoverMoms became a public charity that is exempt from Federal income tax under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
The name MoverMoms was in part an acronym for Moms Volunteering Experiences but also a term connoting that we were a group of moms who work to make things happen, things that make a positive difference in our community.
By renaming from MoverMoms to KindWorks, we are opening our arms wide, from the intimate hug between a Mom and child, to the community wide group hug that our volunteer projects provide!
